John Meyer’s Blues Express - from playing on his father's guitar to Rose Tattoo to successful solo career, John Meyer has always been about the blues. John remembers the time at age 14 when he plugged his guitar into his father's amp and fell in love with the sound it made. Two years later, he was playing in a band on the pub circuit, despite being too young to drink.
By age 22 he was one of Australia’s most sought after guitarists, playing with the likes of Rose Tattoo, Swanee, Sharon O’Neill and Perth bands Fatty Lumpkin, Bakery and Saracen. Later he worked with Chain until the early 1990’s before leaving to build his recording studio.
John started teaching and wrote and produced jingles and documentary soundtracks. During this time he also worked on his second instrumental album “The Shaman.” In recent years John has returned to the live show circuit with his rock blues band Blues Express, which features Peter Oates on bass/vocals and Ric Eastman on drums. It’s a very welcome return.

"Amy's View" a play by David Hare
directed by Joe Isaia
Family Matters?
Amy's View... A stirring, complex play that follows a mother-daughter relationship over sixteen years.
Amy’s View is about a famous theatre actress’ relationship with her daughter,
who falls in love with a film industry man at a time
when the film industry is taking over from live theatre.
--------------------------------------------------------
Relationships can be difficult between Mother and Daughter
and when introducing another character into the equation it can be torturous.
‘Amy’s View’ follows from 1979 through to 1995.
Each one’s life changing to cope with situations coming their way.
‘Amy’s View’ first played on West End in 1997 and written by David Hare,
brings many things to a head in this four part piece.
Truth, contradiction, society, generational gaps and manipulation.
Esme Allen, an ageing actress coping with a new society that is drawn towards
the packaged but enticing movie age and less interested in the theatre.
Esme attributes much of Britain’s moral decline to this new genre.
Amy Thomas, loves her mother but has grown up under the shadow of an opinionated and stubborn Esme.
Left in the middle to cope between two strong characters, the other her partner, Domenic Tyghe.
Domenic Tyghe: A trashy film critic come Director of action movies.
Questioning the validity of theatre in a new era. Questioning Esme.
Evelyn Thomas: The mother of Amy Thomas’ father. In the care of Esme.
A sweet woman, offering light hearted moments and able, at times, to confront Esme.
Frank Oddie: Long time suitor of Esme Allen, waiting in the wings but keeping busy.
Toby Cole: Young, up and coming actor. A reconcilliation between the old guard (Theatre)
and new (Moving Pictures). A fan of both.

"Errol Flynn's Great Big Adventure Book for Boys" written by Rob George
directed by Peter Nettleton
The West Australian premiere of “ERROL FLYNN’S GREAT BIG ADVENTURE BOOK FOR BOYS” by prolific Australian playwright, actor, director and producer Rob George
is Harbour Theatre’s 3rd season for 2008. Directed for Harbour Theatre by Peter Nettleton,
this play was first produced in 1978 by the Stage Company, South Australia 1978
and went on to win the Festival Times Best Play award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1979.
It is a musical comic book look at the comic book life of Australian film legend Errol Flynn from childhood in Hobart Tasmania to white slave trader in New Guinea and finally
to tragic Hollywood has-been. Taken almost entirely from official records and Flynn's own writing,
the play explores the love/hate relationship Flynn had with his own screen image,
and the way that he was both encouraged and condemned in it.
Director Peter Nettleton says that if you know nothing about Errol Flynn
or want to know more then this is a must see show.
The multi-talented cast features Tony Clarke as Errol Flynn and Katherine English as Lois Tudor
who is attempting to interview Errol during the 1950’s when his shining star was on the wane.
As he relates his story various aspects and episodes from his life are re-enacted
by the cast
who take on many of the characters that Errol encountered during his turbulent and at times,
troubled life. The cast is supported by musicians Geoff Stainton on bass,
Dave Hale on guitar and Enzo Piscitelli on drums.
“Errol Flynn was a very “naughty” boy during his life as detailed in his autobiography
“My Wicked, Wicked Ways", says director Peter Nettleton,"so expect this play to contain
adult themes and strong language. However, there will be plenty of songs and sadness,
laughter and gags that were so typical of his life”
Why not have dinner at Clancy’s Fish Pub right next door to the theatre before the show.
Just ask for your Harbour Theatre Meal Deal when ordering and
you will receive a discount on the cost of a full-priced meal.

"Ghosts"
A drama by Henrik Ibsen
Directed by Peter Clark
Darlington Theatre Players, at Marloo Theatre, are proud to present
this powerful work by Henrik Ibsen written in the late 19th Century.
This adaptation by Richard Harris evokes many controversial familial issues even by today’s standards.
The “ghosts” in the play are the taboo topics which are usually not openly discussed
among family members, especially in the Alving household, but circumstances lead them to have to confront their worst fears.
Deftly directed by Peter Clark, also an accomplished actor and well known in West Australian theatre, one can be sure of a quality and thought provoking evening’s entertainment.

"Alice in Wonderland"
Adapted by William Glennon
Directed by Christine Ellis
The Stirling Players are excited to present their latest production, Alice in Wonderland
by
William Glennon, from Lewis Carrol’s classic story.
This new adaptation of Alice is so close to the original in intention and feeling that you might suspect that Carroll himself had written it. A group of performers seek out Alice in order to provide “her turn” in Wonderland. As her adventure unfolds, they play the many characters she encounters and grows to love. All the old favourites are there, including the Caterpillar, TweedleDee and Tweedledum,
the White Rabbit and, of course, the Cheshire Cat. Although this is not a musical, many of
Lewis Carroll’s well known verses feature music and dance.
Director Christine Ellis is well-known in the community theatre scene for her
youth-based productions, and Alice is anticipated to be no exception.
The show is already enjoying much attention and interest from Stirling Players’ members.
Fast-paced and funny, this show is a joy to see and hear, and one that not
only children, but people of all ages will thoroughly enjoy.
This is definitely one to bring the children or grandchildren along to!
"SMS Mess"
PICA

Chris Thomas

Chris Thomas and Phil Barnett
Venue
PICA

opp Alexander Library car park
James St, Northbridge
MANY would relate to mistakenly sending a text message to someone,
a theme explored in the world debut of SMS Mess by Chris Thomas at PICA on Wednesday, July 23.
Part of the annual Putting on an Act short-performance festival at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts from July 22 to 26, Thomas’ script explores the trials and tribulations of text messaging.
Putting on an Act was originally devised in 1994 and developed as an opportunity for WA performers and writers to showcase short, sharp and challenging works, each restricted to 15 minutes.
Thomas took on the challenge, coming up with a script for a one-woman show that mixes comedy with a pointed look at the perils of modern technology.
“I decided to write for a woman because I always hear there aren’t enough parts for females in theatre while others have mentioned they struggle to find worthwhile monologues,” he said.
“The theme for SMS Mess came from observations of people who seemingly live and breathe their life via text messages, almost having entire relationships that way.
“We keep finding ways of isolating ourselves further from actually talking to people, whether it’s via e-mail, text messages, Facebook or MySpace.”
Thomas is no stranger to creative writing – in 2007, his script Reality Matters was the only Australian selection for Blacktown Theatre’s 4Shorts Plus season, his children’s play The Bonza Land of Oz premiered in Kalgoorlie on Australia Day and, more recently, he had a Doctor Who short story published.
He also has a 15-year background in local theatre, appearing on stage in 25 productions including The Sum of Us, Dracula, Frankenstein, Red Dwarf, Popcorn and Picasso At The Lapin Agile to name a few.
“When it came to casting the main role of Kate, I knew it needed an actress that could deliver plenty of sassy and feisty moments along with occasional flashes of insecurity,” Thomas said.
Julia Dalby has taken on the challenge of playing Kate in SMS Mess, drawing on a wealth of experience through diverse roles in Secret Bridesmaid’s Business, Amadeus, Chicago, Shift Swapping, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, Psycho Beach Party and award-winning performances in The Lesson and Two Women And A Chair.
“I was attracted to the script because it made me laugh and I strongly identified with Kate’s hatred of technology,” she said.
“It’s also a challenge because I’ve never done a one-woman show before or even a monologue this long.”
Phil Barnett, fresh from acting in and co-directing The Sum of Us at Old Mill Theatre, is assistant director while also providing technical support.
SMS Mess is one of several pieces being performed from 8pm, Wednesday, July 23, as part of Putting on an Act. Tickets are $18 ($15 concession) – bookings can be made on 9228 6300 or at www.pica.org.au.
Genres cover live art, contemporary dance, experimental music, text-based performance, physical theatre, audio/visual and hybrid works. A different program of performances is highlighted each night with a “best of” showcase on the final night.
Joining SMS Mess on the Wednesday night program are Urban Underground by Urban Moves, InHABIT by GETdownERS, Sharira – the body by Saseedaran K. Anandan, Ten Minute Lesson by Francis Robinson, Repeat by Tom Penney, Fresh Scent by Harry Court and Tom Penney, Our State, Our Lord by Coby McQuiggin and Ricky Woodman, Catastrophe by Mar Bucknell and Beneath Her Dress by So Frenchy Productions.
Based on the novel by popular comic author Terry Pratchett,
Mort tells the story of Death's apprentice as he struggles to deal with reincarnated monks,
assassinated emperors and a rift in the space-time continuum.
Director Ben Anderson and his eclectic cast are having a lot of fun
as they rehearse in anticipation of opening night.
“Pratchett writes great dialogue and anyone familiar with his Discworld series of novels
will recognise all their favourite characters.
“There are lots of Terry Pratchett fans in Kalgoorlie-Boulder – his books are always out from the library – and I hope they can all come along and see the show."

By Carlo Goldoni, translation by Ranjit Bolt Directed by Vanessa Jensen
This is an hilarious tale of mistaken identity and general mayhem in 18th century Verona, Italy.
The plot involves identical twin brothers separated at birth and brought up in different cities.
Unaware of each other they both arrive in Verona on the same day seeking a bride.
Zanetto is a rich but dim-witted merchant while Tonino is a high principled gentleman.
Multiple confusions ensue as each gets mistaken for the other:
Zanetto’s bride to be Rosaura can’t work out whether he is an oaf or a real catch while Beatrice, Tonino's affianced is driven to distraction by his apparent infidelity!
Everyone is totally bewildered and no-one thinks to add two and two until the last minute!
Add skulduggery when cash, jewels and declarations of love are handed to the wrong people
and general mayhem ensues in this fast paced and merry comedy.
This translation was originally made for the Royal Shakespeare Company in England in 1993
and was an instant success, revived in 2004 to great acclaim.
Both Twins are played by the same actor Theo Messenger who is joined by a cast of fourteen,
including familiar faces Garry Davies, Hywel Williams, Peter Bloor and Warren McGrath
with many newcomers to the Old Mill rounding out a stellar cast.
Director Vanessa Jensen is confident that you will thoroughly enjoy this version of
‘I Due Gemelli Veneziani’
Book early for this entertaining and enjoyable romp.

Wanneroo Repertory’s next production is one of the most popular farces of recent years.
A Bedfull of Foreigners, by Dave Freeman, is set during one night in a rundown hotel on the French-German border.
It’s a fast-paced farce which follows the misadventures and misunderstandings which
ensue when five guests create mayhem for the staff and themselves.
There’s a good mixture of mistaken identities, double-bookings, wrong rooms, and a whole lot more.
Director Tony Sims says the pace never lets up as confusion reigns until the final curtain.
The play opens with two British couples booking into the hotel.
Very quickly their evening begins to go downhill.
They wind up in morally compromising positions due to an unfortunate series of coincidences.
As a result they go to great lengths to cover their tracks, but causing only more confusion and chaos.
“It’s great fun to direct and it’s also great fun for the actors and the audiences,” said Tony.
“The play has been a popular one around the world since it was first produced in London’s West End in 1976.”
The cast of Bob and Sue Mainwaring, Gordon Park, David Nelson, David Gostlow,
Susannah Devenish have all appeared in previous productions at the Limelight
while Christine Smith is making her first appearance.

"The Stillborn Lover"
A drama by Timothy Findley
Directed by John Lobb
Garrick Theatre is proud to present The Stillborn Lover,
a play of political and personal betrayalwritten by Canadian playwright Timothy Findley.
Directed by John Lobb, The Stillborn Lover combines espionage, murder,
and homosexuality in this adults only production.
The Canadian ambassador to Moscow and his wife Marian who suffers from Alzheimers
are brought back secretly to Canada and placed in a safe house after
the murder of a young man in the Moscow embassy.
Also in the house are two special agents investigating the murder.
Is he under suspicion? Who was the young man, was he a friend or a lover?
What can Marian recall of their time in Moscow as she slips away
from reality into her own little world?
What are the plans of the ambassador’s long time friend Michael Riordon have for them,
as he pushes to become the next Prime Minister of Canada.
Director John Lobb says he first read the script several years ago when it was submitted
at Garrick and thought ‘what a great story’. The play didn’t go ahead that year,
however whilst Lobb was looking for a play last year, he rang the now late George Dickinson,
the highly respected WA director who originally submitted the show.
“George was thrilled that I was keen to present this powerful production,
and with our exceptional cast, we sincerely hope and are confident this production
would make George proud”.
The Stillborn Lover contains adult themes and some discreet nudity,
therefore making this show suitable for adult audiences only.
All shows commence at 8pm excluding a Sunday matinee performance on Sunday August 10 at 2pm.
Featuring:

Rockingham Theatre, for their September 2008 Production, is presenting the hilarious Comedy/Farce “Lend Me A Tenor” by Ken Ludwig.
Set in 1934, the farce revolves around renowned tenor Tito Merelli,
known to his fans as "Il Stupendo," who is scheduled to sing the lead in Othello,
produced as a gala fundraiser for the Cleveland Opera Company.
Unfortunately, even before the star leaves his hotel room, everything begins to unravel.
Chaos ensues when a "Dear John" letter is left by his wife,
who has mistaken an autograph-seeker hidden in his closet for a secret lover.
The distraught Merelli accidentally is given a double dose of tranquilizers to calm him and passes out.
Saunders, the company's General Manager, is determined the show must go on
(for his own financial sake), so he enlists the aid of his assistant Max to impersonate the opera star.
Max is succeeding admirably . . . until Merelli awakens and heads for the stage.
What follows is a chain-reaction of confusion, plot twists, double entendres,
innuendoes, and constant entrances and exits through many doors.
Great entertainment and humour from start to finish.
This play when launched onto the world stages received many nominations and awards
and when it opened on Broadway it ran for 476 performances.
Rockingham Theatre has chosen a talented cast who we are confident will give you quality entertainment.
